The verdict
partly measured — Geometry, sky and bed are read. No carrier schedule has been read for the airport. Read 13 September 2026.
The best value behind the strait. 4m50s in a UNESCO medina — thirty-seven seconds more than Chefchaouen, because Tétouan sits far closer to the centre line — for an eclipse premium of ×1.21 on the bed. Two things to know before you commit: the sky here is the one the reanalyses argued about, and nobody has read a flight into its airport.

What it costs
measured — Two windows on one platform: the eclipse week, and the same search a week later. Read 24 September 2026.
€136 for four nights, two adults, one room, 31 July 2027 to 4 August 2027 — against €112 for the same query a week later, same weekdays, same length. A premium of ×1.21: real, and nowhere near the strait towns' multiples. Read on Booking.com, 24 September 2026.
AvailabilityPrice and availability move together here. On the day we looked the platform reported 87% of the town's own listed stock unavailable for those dates — a sharper signal than the price alone.

What to do next
measured — Follows from the readings above. Read 18 September 2026.
- Move on the room first. Price up and availability down together is the sharpest signal this site measures, and it is what Tétouan shows.
- Do not assume a flight into Saniat R'mel. The airport exists; whether any carrier sells August 2027 out of it is unread.
- Treat the sky figure as arbitrated, not agreed. Two reanalyses disagreed here and a third broke the tie — read the fold before you weigh it against Egypt.
Getting there and getting aroundnot published by the operators
A rich local bus network is mapped and no timetable exists for any of it. Two organisations were asked; neither handed over a grid. Asked: CTM, Regional GTFS aggregator. Read 12 September 2026.
By air
Tétouan has its own airport, Saniat R'mel, close to the medina — unlike Chefchaouen, which has none. What Royal Air Maroc, Ryanair or any other carrier actually sells for August 2027 out of it is not on this page: the schedule refresh for this wave has not run. It is not half-repeated here from a stale or partial reading.
On the ground
OpenStreetMap around Tétouan shows the aerodrome, no rail line, four bus stations (CTM, a general "Gare Routière", and two unnamed) and 294 bus stops across 50 named route relations, all of them the urban Vitalis network. That is markedly richer coverage than Chefchaouen's single unnamed stop, and it reads as a town with a real municipal network rather than a gap in the map.
2 operators asked, most recently on 12 September 2026 — 0 publishing a timetable, 2 where we never got through the door. What each one returned:
| Operator | What came back | Asked |
|---|---|---|
| CTMctm.ma | could not be reachedThe certificate served for ctm.ma names a different host (a Plesk default, “pensive-taussig.212-95-34-106.plesk.page”), so a client that checks the certificate cannot complete the connection. A direct request without certificate verification does reach the site and gets a 200, which is why this is read as our tooling failing to verify an operator that exists, not as CTM refusing us. The same anomaly was still present eleven days later, on the 2026-09-12 pass. | 12 September 2026 |
| Regional GTFS aggregatorhub.tumidata.org | could not be reachedThe host does not answer at all — a connection failure after 21 seconds, not a refusal by an application. | 12 September 2026 |
A route being mapped is not a timetable being published. CTM's own site could not be read (a certificate anomaly), and the regional GTFS aggregator that might have carried Vitalis's grid did not answer at all. This page does not say what time a bus leaves Tétouan, or whether Vitalis runs on eclipse morning — that is a gap in what we could read, not a claim that the network does not run.
With a car
A French licence is enough for a mission of a few days. France Diplomatie's advice for Morocco states that a foreign national may drive on a valid licence issued in their own country for up to one year from the start of their stay; only past that year does the visitor need to sit the Moroccan test or exchange the licence. An international driving permit is "vivement encouragée" — strongly encouraged — and not required for that first year.
GOV.UK's equivalent notice, written for a British licence, requires the 1968 version of the international driving permit alongside the UK licence and states plainly that "Morocco no longer accepts the 1949 version of the IDP". The two notices answer different holders and this page does not merge them into one rule.
No car hire firm at Tétouan or Tanger airport has been checked for a cross-border clause, a one-way restriction, or any condition at all: that survey covers Jerez and Gibraltar so far and has not reached Morocco. Nothing here should be read as those restrictions being absent — only as not yet read. ⛔ And no rental price appears on this page or any other on this site.
How we measured thismeasured
Where every figure above comes from. Read 13 September 2026.
When and where
Mid-totality is at 08:47:31 Morocco time (UTC+0), the same morning moment as the rest of this stretch of the path, with the Sun 38.4° above the horizon on a bearing of 095°, almost due east. Tétouan's distance from the axis is 0.13 of the way to the edge of the path, against 0.51 for Chefchaouen, which is the whole of the 37-second difference between them.
The sky, and why it is arbitrated
- Cloud at the hour of totality
- 23.1 %average cover, Copernicus ERA5
- Cloud over the whole day
- 20.9 % to 21.0 %NASA POWER 20.9 % · Copernicus ERA5 21.0 %
- Days under 30 % cover
- 66.7 % to 78.0 %of the 264 days measured, same two sources
Tétouan · 28 July - 7 August, 2001-2024 (264 days) · averages of past years, not a forecast. The two reanalyses are 0.1 points apart on mean cover and 11.3 points apart on the share of clear days here, so a third source breaks the tie: EUMETSAT CM SAF CLARA-A3 satellite observation reads 21.6 % and sides with ERA5 — the 21.0 % end.
Climatology: NASA POWER · Copernicus ERA5 · EUMETSAT CM SAF. How we measure cloud
At the hour totality falls, mean cloud over Tétouan is 23.1 %. Of the 88 sites along this path we publish a figure for, that makes it the 73rd clearest at that hour.
Tétouan is one of the 22 sites on this path where NASA POWER and Copernicus ERA5 land on different figures for the same window. That is why this page's verdict is "divergent" rather than "corroborated" like Chefchaouen's: the two reanalyses did not settle it between themselves, so a third, independent satellite record (EUMETSAT CM SAF) is read in to arbitrate. The figure above is the arbitrated reading, not a simple average of the two.
The bed
| Four nights, 2 adults | Average of the ten cheapest | Properties offered for those dates |
|---|---|---|
| Eclipse window, 31 July 2027 | €136 | 58 |
| Control week, 7 August 2027 | €112 | 173 |
We publish the average of the ten cheapest listings rather than the cheapest one: a single odd listing moves a floor anywhere it likes, and a floor alone hides how fast prices climb after it.
The availability share above is a share of the 482 properties Booking.com's dateless town page announces, not of the 10 listings we sampled. "Unavailable" is not "booked", and it is not the same measurement as the price line.
What this does not say. One platform, one reading, one day. It says nothing about whether this holds a year out, and the query is re-run on a schedule so a curve exists rather than an anecdote.
